Reducing Energy Use Over The Next Ten Years By Teaching Energy Efficiency In Arizona

The state of Arizona has adopted one of the most aggressive policies in the nation aimed at decreasing our energy use.  All regulated electric companies are now required to reduce the amount of power they sell twenty two percent by the year 2020.  Energy use typically goes up each year, so that big of a decrease in ten years will take some real work.

The idea is to teach energy efficiency in Arizona by educating homeowners and businesses in energy usage.  Reducing energy usage eliminates the need for building more multimillion dollar power plants and all the transmission lines that go with them.

Those of us that take the advice of the utility companies and adopt their energy saving ideas stand to save a total of 9 billion dollars over the next ten years.

In order to get people thinking about reducing their energy usage many plans are being set into motion.  It is going to take a lot of help, and a lot of work, by the utility companies.  Some of the plans include subsidizing the cost of low power light bulbs, paying rebates when a customer plants a shade tree and helping with the purchases of energy efficient appliances.

Not all the utility companies are happy with the new regulations.  It is unclear how the will fund the programs and they say the goals might be set to high.  The 22% does take into account population growth, so it might not be that unrealistic.

It appears Arizona Public Service is all for the new regulations and has a 42 million dollar budget set aside for this year.  This money will go to promoting energy efficiency and this amount will increase in the years to come.  Most of the money will be spent in the form of incentive programs, so all Arizona residents need to be watching for how they can take advantage of this and start to become part of the solution.

Currently in Arizona consumers can look for the following rebates and incentives.

  • Air conditioning rebates

  • Rebates for testing and repairing air ducts

  • Efficient pool pump rebates

  • Home energy audits

  • Energy Star homes

  • Discounted window shade screens

The idea behind this plan is to educate and create enough incentives to make you want to change the way you do things.  And given ten years, it does not have to be all at once.  If every time you replace, or upgrade, you do so in a energy efficient manor, in ten years you will be using at least twenty percent less electricity.  That's the plan for energy efficiency in Arizona, are we up for the challenge.
