Garden pests

Hi, love you site, It’s so nice to have a resource like this to turn to. Being green is fun and I learn more every day. Here are a few green tips I would like to pass along. Do you ever have a problem with cats or rabbits in your garden? I did until I started using cayenne pepper. Just sprinkle it around your garden and the pests will stay gone.

Are you bothered by mosquitoes or gnats? Try mixing a tablespoon of vanilla extract into a cup of water. Rub it over your face and hands. I hate spending the money on can full of chemicals so when I find something like this that works and spread the word.

I was told coffee grounds were good for your compost pile. I don’t drink coffee so I went into town and visited our local Starbucks. They said they would gladly save, and give to me, all the coffee grounds I can use.

Have a blast being green and keep up the great work.

Lynn

Vermicomposting
by: Jacki

I keep my coffee grounds and tea leaves for my herd of worms. I keep them happy in my root cellar which stays just above freezing.

They live in a rubbermaid container with a loosely fitting lid, and they also get all my cardboard egg cartons and lots of shredded newspaper, as well as a small amount of horse manure and shredded leaves.

I used to feed them all my compost, but it got too smelly, so now they are on a limited diet.

In the future, I hope to have enough to share with my chicken flock for a pick-me-up in the winter months. They love worms! My husband raids the very bottom of the farm for the big ones when he goes fishing.

Fly Spray
by: Jack

For flies gnats and bugs I use dish soap liquid in a spray bottle, just add water and let them have it.
Works great.
