Green In Rhode Island

time to go green clock Did you know it was time to go green in Rhode Island?  It is, and now is as good a time as any.  If you are already working to green the state, why not take a minute and help me get a few more people involved, just tell us what you are doing and how we can help.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council is a good place to learn about energy efficiency, green jobs and green buildings.  They offer educational events statewide and will provide speakers for your school, business or private event.  If you are in the trades their LEED training should be of importance to you.

All of you Rhode Island business owners should have an interest in this site.  The Green Zone is Rhode Islands one-stop shopping resource for business recycling solutions.  Recycling is big, especially in business where the waste can be outrageous.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the Sierra Club is an excellent way to get involved in greening the state.  The always have activities in the works where volunteers are needed.  The vision of the Rhode Island Sierra Club is to protect our fresh ocean air and legacy of our beaches and coastlines by reducing global warming pollution to sustainable levels and broaden the prosperity of Rhode Island communities with affordable commutes and green jobs and reduce our dependence on dirty, imported oil.

The University of Rhode Island has a pretty cool site called the  URI Green Links Directory.  The school is going green and wanted a way to share the events that are taking place.  This site has some interesting reading on it and also shows you the importance the university is placing on green.  Reading about green schools always makes my day because it means that teachers are getting it.  When teachers get it, they teach it to our kids so that they get it.

Another advantage to green schools is that the students are healthier.  They are absent fewer days and have higher test scores.  Are your local schools green?  Do the kids go to school in an environmentally healthy building?  Do they learn about sustainability and energy conservation in the classroom.  Hopefully you can answer yes to both of these questions, if not, maybe this is an area that needs work, maybe it's a starting point to going green in Rhode Island.  As it happens, post back here and let us know what and where.
