Chickens in the organic garden

Chickens in the organic garden

I've been an organic gardener for many years. Using Mother Natures own systems to combat bugs and diseases, making compost and observing before doing anything has helped make my garden very successful. I don't even use the common BT or bacillus thuringiensis for moth control in my garden, as it can kill off your beautiful butterflies too.

My most useful addition for bug control has been some Bantam chickens which I hatched from eggs in the summer. They eat anything! I pull up broccoli or cabbage plants infested with aphids and cabbage loopers, and they're like vultures! I put bags of leaves collected by friends in their pen and they scratch them into shreds, making them much more useable in the garden as mulch.

Knowing that my vegetables are clean and pesticide free gives me such satisfaction, and the idea that I'm helping the earth too is very comforting. I encourage everyone with any amount of ground to till to grow some of their own food on it. You won't regret it.
