While you are thinking about going green around the home don’t forget about water use. Water harvesting has become a popular phrase in the green community. A very basic application of this would be to catch as much rain water as possible and use it to water your plants and trees.
Inside the house consider other uses for water before you put them down the drain. Boiling, or extremely hot water, can be poured over weeds to kill them. Try this for a while instead of chemical treatments.
Left over water from cooking can, in many cases, be full of nutrients and make excellent vitamin supplements for you veggies and herbs. Organic type detergents and cleaners are on the market that leave many other types of gray water usable for watering purposes.
Be sure to do a periodic check of all your facets, indoors and out. A constant drip, no matter how small, adds up to a lot of water in a months time. Put as much of your out door watering as possible on a timer and be sure to change it with the seasons.
Become aware of your water use and begin to think about the little things. Just like turning off a light when leaving a room, turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Just doing little things over and over again help you to save money and helps to save our planet for future generations.
